It’s possible that I’m overreacting, but…
tonight at my rehearsal, all the guys in the group presented flowers, candy, and a song to all the girls in the group.
At face value, this seems like a nice, sweet, thoughtful gesture.
And maybe that’s all it is.
But the whole time I’m just sitting there getting angry thinking about terms like “heternormative” and “compulsory heterosexuality” and “gender roles.”
Like one of the guys was like, “Valentine’s Day is all about the ladies.”
WHY IS IT ALL ABOUT THE LADIES? Are women genetically predisposed to love flowers? Do men hate receiving gifts from there loved ones? Is it every woman’s secret longing to be infantilized into a “princess?”
Anyway, random icing on the cake:later, we were talking about food, and this girl said “I don’t like that food, but maybe it’s a guy thing. Maybe only men like it.”
I’m just so sick of gender.
BUT, I also feel like I’m probably overreacting, because it really was a bunch of really nice people trying to do something really nice for their friends.
*SIGH* rant over

I am always conscious of this. It is my life to tear down heteronormative norms. However, I am learning to let stuff slide bc people are ignorant and they cannot be expected to be aware all the time. It was not malicious and you cannot fault them.
