Musicalsssss

This weekend I trekked up to Seoul for the third Saturday in a row in order to see a production of The Three Musketeers.  I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it!  BUT, in typical hyper-critical-emily fashion, I had a lot of thoughts.

How is it April already? HOW?!

It’s probably extremely silly for me to write a blog post on the brink of the G-Dragon concert, because I know I’ll want to write another one as soon as that’s over, but it’s been about 3 weeks, so I feel compelled to update.

My day at school today: my schedule vs. what actually happened

1st Period: No class.
2nd Period: No class.
3rd Period: Class.  Students showed up 15 minutes late due to extremely typical confusion about where they were supposed to be.
4th Period: Class.  Everyone showed up on time, which made me very confused.
5th Period: Class.  No one showed up.
6th Period: No class.  Found out right before 6th period that my 5th period class changed to 6th period.  So I ended up having class.
7th Period: Class.  (Currently in.)  No one showed up.

Lol, I love my job.

So my coteacher just asked me to read over the English drama that we will be doing next semester…

…and it’s called The Prince and the Princess and it’s all about gender nonconformity and how you should be able to like cooking and sewing even if you’re a boy and sword fighting if you’re a girl and the two main characters switch identities for a while and I’m just sitting here like…

KOREA I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS

Q:Do you have to be super smart in grammar to become an English teacher in Korea? Because I would like to teach English in Korea, I know the basics but I wouldn’t say I’m at 100%, maybe because I'm still in high school (last year). I guess I’ll just keep studying. Thank you

Anonymous

Not at all!  All they want is for you to be a native English speaker.  My Korean co-teachers generally know much more about English grammar than me, and that seems to be true with most foreign teachers here.  You are here for your accent, and your fluency, not your grammatical knowledge.

Obviously if you have atrocious grammar it might be a problem, but I can see from your message that you don’t!  ㅋㅋㅋ  Good luck in the future!

On Vacations & KPOP Concerts

It feels like it’s been a fairly long time since my last post, largely because I’ve been busy having fun and spending grotesque amounts of money.  image

The students at my school had the entire month of January off, and I was given a 10 day vacation which I spent traveling around Korea with my good friend who came to visit from the States.  We had a lovely time and spent a few days in Daegu, Seoul, Busan, and Gyeongju.  Highlights include trekking to the Daegu Art Museum only to find that it was closed, going to a Noraebang with my co-teacher and his daughter, going to really expensive BARZ, seeing a spectacular temple in Busan, and the two of us being so ill in Seoul that we spent all day sleeping until an attempt to venture out ended with me vomiting in the subway.
